Join me in support NISGUA's work for justice in Guatemala

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page in support of Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA)!

Continuing my 13 year commitment to justice with the people of Guatemala – both those in Guatemala and those who have been forced to migrate – I ask for your support in a special two-week fundraiser for an organization I have worked with for over 13 years.

NISGUA is a U.S.-based 401(c)(3) NGO that works to protect human rights defenders in Guatemala through advocacy campaigns and physical accompaniment to dissuade attacks. We are celebrating over 40 years of incredible work supporting rural organizations in Guatemala that face intimidation and threats because of their work defending human rights; organizing with indigenous communities that confront issues that fuel migration; and advocating for policies that strengthen Guatemala's justice system. Currently, I sit on NISGUA's Board of Directors and previously, worked as a human rights accompanier with NISGUA during the Guatemalan genocide case against former head of state General Efrain Rios Montt.

From now until the end of the month, all donations to NISGUA will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a small group of longtime NISGUA donors. NISGUA is trying to raise $100,000. You can make a donation here in my fundraising page.

Over the several years, Guatemala has experienced an increasing deterioration of the rule of law, accompanied by systematic attacks on human rights defenders and civil society. This year is an election year in Guatemala. The next president and congress will be determined in elections in June, with probable run-off elections in the fall.

In the first five months of the year, we have witnessed increasing repression against judges, lawyers, journalists, and human rights defenders, the closure of democratic spaces that are essential for promoting change, and the institution of new laws designed to restrict the role of international organizations in supporting basic human rights. Among the high-profile actions taken by the government, presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Thelma Cabrera, a well-respected indigenous leader and activist, and Jordan Rodas, the former Human Rights Ombudsman, were baselessly prevented from participating in the elections; and one of the largest newspapers, El Periodico, was recently shutdown. The effects have been so serious that the U.S. decided to sanction several high-level public officials, including Guatemala's attorney general and Guatemala's anti-corruption prosecutor, as well as numerous congressional representatives.

In this context, NISGUA continues to work in solidarity with Guatemalan movements and organizations to promote justice and social change through Justice and Accountability, Defense of Land & Territory, and building Trans-Territorial Organizing. Here are just a few projects NISGUA has worked on, among many others, over the last year:

• During the second half of 2022, nine migrant, women’s, and indigenous organizations from Guatemala and the United States gathered monthly for the Trans Territorial Table. They taught each other about the challenges and successes of their struggles, and strategized how to work together. Each of them received funding for a project that improves their community.

• After a delegation of U.S. congressional representatives hosted by NISGUA and other Central American organizations in April 2022, NISGUA met with with various representatives to advocate for the cancellation of U.S. military aid to Guatemala, which has been repeatedly misused by the government to commit human rights violations. In December 2022, in conjunction with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador and Guatemala Human Rights Commission, NISGUA mobilized over 500 people to call their Senators to make this petition.

Continuando con mi compromiso con la justicia y con el pueblo de Guatemala - tanto aquellos guatemaltecos que están en Guatemala como los que se han visto obligados a emigrar - pido su apoyo en una recaudación de fondos especial de dos semanas para una organización con la que he trabajado durante más de 13 años.

NISGUA es una ONG 401(c)(3) con sede en Estados Unidos que trabaja para proteger a los defensores de los derechos humanos en Guatemala mediante campañas de defensa y acompañamiento físico para disuadir ataques. Estamos celebrando más de 40 años de increíble labor apoyando a organizaciones rurales de Guatemala que se enfrentan a intimidaciones y amenazas por su trabajo de defensa de los derechos humanos; organizando con comunidades indígenas que se enfrentan a problemas que alimentan la migración; y abogando por políticas que fortalezcan el sistema de justicia de Guatemala. Actualmente formo parte de la Junta Directiva de NISGUA y, anteriormente, trabajé como acompañante de derechos humanos con NISGUA durante el caso de genocidio guatemalteco contra el ex jefe de Estado, el general Efraín Ríos Montt.

Durante los ultimos años, Guatemala ha vivido un creciente deterioro del Estado de derecho, acompañado de ataques sistemáticos contra los defensores de los derechos humanos y la sociedad civil. Este año es año de elecciones en Guatemala. El próximo presidente y el Congreso se elegirán en las elecciones de junio, con una probable segunda vuelta en otoño.

En los primeros cinco meses del año, hemos sido testigos del aumento de la represión contra jueces, abogados, periodistas y defensores de los derechos humanos, del cierre de espacios democráticos que son esenciales para promover el cambio y de la institución de nuevas leyes diseñadas para restringir el papel de las organizaciones internacionales en el apoyo a los derechos humanos básicos. Entre las acciones más notorias emprendidas por el gobierno, se impidió sin motivo alguno que los candidatos a la presidencia y vicepresidencia, Thelma Cabrera, una respetada líder y activista indígena, y Jordán Rodas, ex Defensor del Pueblo para los Derechos Humanos, participaran en las elecciones; y recientemente se cerró uno de los periódicos de mayor tirada, El Periódico. Los efectos han sido tan graves que Estados Unidos decidió sancionar a varios funcionarios públicos de alto nivel, entre ellos el fiscal general y el fiscal anticorrupción de Guatemala, así como a numerosos representantes del Congreso.

En este contexto, NISGUA continúa trabajando en solidaridad con los movimientos y organizaciones guatemaltecas para promover la justicia y el cambio social a través de la Justicia Transicional, la Defensa de la Vida y el Territorio, y la construcción de Movilizacion Transfronteriza. Estos son sólo algunos de los proyectos en los que NISGUA ha trabajado, entre muchos otros, durante el último año:

• Durante el segundo semestre de 2022, nueve organizaciones de migrantes, mujeres e indígenas de Guatemala y Estados Unidos se reunieron mensualmente en la Mesa Transterritorial. Se enseñaron mutuamente los retos y éxitos de sus luchas, y trazaron estrategias para trabajar juntos. Cada una de ellas recibió financiación para un proyecto de mejora de su comunidad.
• Durante el segundo semestre de 2022, nueve organizaciones de migrantes, mujeres e indígenas de Guatemala y Estados Unidos se reunieron mensualmente en la Mesa Transterritorial.
