Thanks for visiting my fundraising page in support of Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA)!
[During the last year I was an Internacionalista with NISGUA both in Guatemala and remotely. This past year has been challenging for so many considering the pandemic and the need to resist oppressive regimes around the world. The reason I am asking you to donate specifically to NISGUA is that they have been steadfast, even through such a tumultuous year, in their support of Guatemalan communities resisting neoliberalism and seeking justice. During the past year, I got to see the incredible strength and resilience of the individuals and communities that NISGUA partners with. I also came to better understand that individuals participating in this movement are taking on the very real risk of state repression. I believe accompaniment is a tool that has the power to lessen this risk, and so I believe in the work NISGUA is doing.
It is also important to me people understand the impact that the US has had on Guatemala. The US has a long history of foreign intervention and extractavism in Guatemala. This year specifically the US contributed to crisis in Guatemala by deporting so many people during a pandemic, which essentially meant deporting COVID-19 into Guatemala. The US has also sent and is continuing to send money to Mexico and Guatemala to militarize their southern borders making it harder and harder for people to migrate north, fleeing the destruction the US has been integral in creating in Central America. For these reasons, I think it is important for folks living as citizens in the so-called US to support community resistance in Guatemala.
Please take a moment to donate! Thanks so much!]
What will my gift support?
- International accompaniment - We are excited to continue expanding our accompaniment program. Currently, during the pandemic, we have adjusted to a remote accompaniment model. Read more about our year of remote accompaniment here.
- Cross-border organizing - NISGUA facilitates exchange between movements in the U.S. and Guatemala through virtual meetings, webinars, speaking tours, and delegations. Read about our most recent delegation here, or watch the latest webinar, here.
- Campaign development - In order to bring about long-term change, we know that educating our base and speaking truth to power is crucial. Read about our latest campaign win to suspend the Asylum Cooperative Agreements, and take action in the continued campaign to end title-42 explosions and all deportations.
- Relationship-building with Guatemalan partners - Staff and volunteers maintain regular contact with our Guatemalan counterparts who are fighting for justice and defending their territories. What we learn from our partners informs every other strategy we employ. Learn more here.
Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala, and every gift made, up to $50,000 will be matched, dollar-for-dollar! Thank you!
