I was fortunate to work as an international accompanier with NISGUA in Guatemala in 2005 and then as a staff member in DC and Guatemala for another two years. I now serve as a member of NISGUA's board, even though juggling my roles as a mother and non-profit immigration attorney is particularly challenging in our present moment.

I am making the time to support NISGUA this year because NISGUA's agility and relevance has never been more apparent. For example:

  • The Guatemalan government took measures starting in March to prevent the spread of COVID. This included a country-wide curfew, limiting movement across the country, banning public transportation, and closing many “non-essential” services. In response, NISGUA swiftly created a fully remote accompaniment protocol and program that keeps us connected, alert, and in real time with our partners, including communities and organizations in rural areas. Our staff and volunteers are continuing to lift up urgent action opportunities and important updates from our partners via communications in social media and beyond.
  • Contrary to its own public health recommendations, the U.S. continues to deport migrants to Central America and the Carribean. NISGUA joined LAWG and other organizations by promoting a petition, signed by more than 2,000 people, demanding that the Department of Homeland Security halt all deportations during the crisis.
  • In April, NISGUA transitioned our two-week in-person tour to one online event with Asociacion Pop No’j. The webinar had 500+ live attendees and (so far) 3400+ views on Facebook. Check out the webinar recording here. We look forward to more virtual events, including another webinar on the safe third country agreements in June and other organizing spaces that will take place online.

I have experienced firsthand NISGUA's ability to facilitate radical connection and transformation, and as such, I'm so excited to see where these new spaces for horizontal exchange take our social movements.

By making a gift today, you'll ensure the sustainability of NISGUA's work to continue cultivating long-term, transnational relationships grounded in a shared vision for global change. This is a crucial moment and every dollar counts. Between May 15 and May 31, 2020, all donations received up to $50,000 will be matched dollar for dollar!
