đź’ International Accompaniment
Since our last match campaign, NISGUA trained and placed 8 new accompaniers alongside Guatemalan partners facing repression. This year, accompaniers:
- Attended 90+ genocide trial hearings in solidarity with Maya Ixil survivors.
- Helped bring international media attention to the Ixil Genocide trial.
- Facilitated direct engagement between Guatemalan human rights groups and the U.S. Embassy.
- Helped keep the memory of genocide alive, even when the trial was annulled.
Justice and Accountability
In 2024, NISGUA supported partners like AJR through:
- 2 international delegations centered on memory, diaspora, and youth leadership.
- Webinars & teach-ins to educate international audiences about the genocide trial and land defense struggles.
- Campaigns to pressure U.S. officials to witness and act in the face of human rights violations.
"NISGUA walks alongside the witnesses. All this commitment strengthens us as an organization."
— José Silvio, General Coordinator, AJR (Association for Justice and Reconciliation)
🌍 Defense of Life and Territory
NISGUA supported Xinka and Huehuetenango communities organizing against extractive industries by:
- Co-hosting a webinar on criminalization of land defenders.
- Participating in territorial assemblies and supporting emergency needs for 8 organizations.
- Holding 10+ meetings with civil society coalitions like CAMIGUA and Breaking the Silence Network.
“Your accompaniment is of vital importance to continue our work in defense of territory and safeguard our integrity.”
— Emy Gómez, Resistance of the Xinka People
📚 Political Education & U.S. Advocacy
- Published Seeds of Life: Guatemala Beyond Elections, an interview series with Guatemalan leaders.
- Organized 4 teach-ins, including one on connections between Guatemala and Palestine.
- Held 8 political education events and translated 18 communiqués from partners.
This is movement work grounded in trust, reciprocity, and persistence. It is also work that requires resources—and it’s happening at a time when U.S.-based grassroots organizations are seeing major funding cuts. Meanwhile, the rise of the extreme right in the U.S. continues to embolden state violence and repression across the globe. As the U.S. pours billions into border militarization, extractivism, and corporate power, it is more urgent than ever to sustain organizations that continue to resist, connect, and inspire radical change.
Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala
