This is my 20th year working to support NISGUA’s mission to build deep and mutual solidarity with Indigenous and Campesino defenders of life, territory and memory in Guatemala.

As we fight authoritarianism and fascism, the example of social movements in Guatemala (and around the world) offer us strategies and tactics for how we can fortify our resistance to the fascist right agenda. The 2025 encampments in Guatemala City, which exercised the political voice and will of rural-based Indigenous authorities, and flexed the social and political power of community leaders flanked by urban social movements. Multi-year resistance to transnational mega-dams and mines on Indigenous and Campesino lands, some of whom have maintained territorial defense for decades. Transnational solidarity from Guatemala, with rural communities extending advice, care and a welcome home to those living under threat of detention and deportation in the U.S.

There are bountiful examples of struggles we can learn from as we in the U.S. social movement Left fight the Trump/MAGA agenda.

NISGUA’s steady, long-term, and mutual relationships in Guatemala bring us together with these movements. Through internationalist volunteers, communications, and permanent staff in Guatemala, they represent and extend our solidarity while carrying the lessons back to us. They do it on a shoestring budget that is almost 100% supported by grassroots donations.

I’m proud to serve on the NISGUA board and ask you to join me in supporting their work!
