Both of us have spent the last three years working in antiracism, immigration justice, and interfaith movements in Philadelphia. In our work, we have been positioned to see the daily, very emotional impact of racism, poverty, and failed immigration policy on immigrant communities. After all we have experienced, we find ourselves back here again with NISGUA, compelled by solidarity work in Central America, because we are convinced that this is the work to be done.

It is in NISGUA’s Indigenous-centered, women-led work that we have found tactics and movements that are truly transforming towards a reality where those most affected by climate change and imperialism are leading the way to a better future for all of us.

Join us in supporting NISGUA to resume its critical work. Maisie is excited to become NISGUA’s first new accompanier since the pandemic! They will begin that work in Guatemala in September 2022.

While exploitative industries, corrupt governments, and militarized borders have a long history of human rights offenses against the people of Guatemala, the pandemic has exacerbated this violence. Politicians and governments, both in the US and Guatemala, have used COVID-19 as an excuse to repress community movements and override due process.

That is why it is so important that NISGUA (the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala) is transitioning back to the in-person work of accompanying Guatemalan land defenders and genocide survivors. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated how interconnected our communities really are, NISGUA’s unique work illustrates the interdependence of struggles for accountability and autonomy across borders and languages.

Now is the time to give! Until May 31st, all donations up to $50K will be matched dollar for dollar by a small group of generous donors. Together, we can raise $100K!

We need 60 people to give $25 to get us to our goal. If you can give more than that, we encourage it! Thank you and we look forward to staying in touch as this new chapter opens for NISGUA and for us.

with gratitude,

Maisie & Liv

What does NISGUA do?

Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) accompanies Guatemalan water protectors and genocide survivors who are under threat for their political work. We use accompaniment to dissuade violence, we connect partners in Guatemala with folks in the U.S. who are similarly impacted by colonialism, we organize campaigns against the U.S.'s unjust foreign policy and corporate violence in Central America, and we mobilize people for urgent action if our partners are threatened or attacked.
