Thanks for visiting my fundraising page in support of Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA)!

NISGUA does absolutely critical work elevating the capacity of partner organizations in Guatemala who seek to create a more just, prosperous, and peaceful society for all, a Guatemala where human rights and environmental protection are consistently guaranteed. It is my hope to one day serve as an International Accompanier working on the ground in Guatemala in solidarity with partner organizations. For the past two years, I have been active in NISGUA as a monthly financial supporter and event planner.

This year, NISGUA is celebrating 41 years of accompaniment, cross-border organizing, and relationship-building. It is an honor to celebrate this lineage. In commemoration of these four decades, from May 15 - 31, NISGUA has an opportunity to raise $100,000 to sustain our people-to-people organizing for social and environmental justice. I’m committed to helping NISGUA meet this goal and have challenged myself to raise $1,000. Can I count on your support?

What will your gift support?

NISGUA’s 2021 Accomplishments report

1. Accompaniment:

a. March 2020-2022 we created a remote accompaniment strategy that served as a regional model. In those two years, we made over 1337 digital contacts with partners to monitor their safety and respond to their requests!

b. Since February, we took our first steps towards a new hybrid remote/in-person model: former volunteers from years past came to Guatemala to provide crucial accompaniment coverage.

c. In April 2022 we trained our 2022 GAP Internacionalistas volunteer, before their arrival for accompaniment in September. More former accompaniers are planning to provide accompaniment throughout the year as well!

2. Centering Indigenous migrants: Our 2021 series of webinars about Indigenous migrants and the root causes of forced migration reached over 1500 people and gathered over 1300 signatures on a petition demanding an end to Title 42 expulsions of asylum seekers and protections for Indigenous migrants. Check them out: “On our own terms: Indigenous perspectives on forced displacement & immigration systems” and "Indigenous Peoples' Human Rights in Migration"

3. Reopening our Guatemala City office: After two years of forced remote work due to the pandemic, our Guatemala City team is back on the ground! They are busy connecting with our Guatemalan partners, always using the strictest COVID protocols possible.

4. Justice and Accountability:

a. Since early this year, we provided accompaniment at the intermediate phase of the case against Luis Enrique Mendoza García, who served as chief of operations of the National Defense General Staff from 1982 to 1983 and will face trial for genocide and crimes against humanity.

b. We also have been present at the intermediate phase of the Military Diary case, in which twelve former military and police officials are accused of a variety of crimes, including forced disappearance, torture, murder, crimes against humanity, and sexual violence. The Military Diary is a document that lists the names of 183 people who were considered internal enemies and were captured and forcibly disappeared between 1983-1985.

c. In a context of severe setbacks on the judicial independence in the country, our accompaniment of trials serves as a key tool to ensure that survivors continue their work in their search for justice.

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala, and every gift made, up to $40,000 will be matched, dollar-for-dollar! Thank you!
