I got to be a NISGUA Internacionalista from 2023-2024. The brilliant and scrappy NISGUA network, alongside partners on the frontlines of land, water, and historical memory keeping in Guatemala, have grown and shaped me deeply.
One morning during the 106-day strike against corruption in Guatemala, a compa doing a 24-hour shift in front of the capital's Public Ministry reminded me that for every person out in the streets, there is another supporting them, taking care of the goats and the kids at home. The participation of the person taking care of the goats and kids is equally valuable and necessary. I think about that often at actions here at home, when there's 5000 in the street, how many thousands are making it possible for them to be there? Who's cooking the giant meal to share with neighbors we're organizing with? Who's raising the funds? (you and me! ;)) I say all of this to remind us of everything it takes to build and sustain movements.
I am just one of countless people NISGUA has brought into relationships of cross-border solidarity over the last 45+ years. Throughout that time, social movements in the so-called US and Guatemala have had heartbreaking defeats and groundbreaking victories. Victories like the Ixil Genocide case bringing Ríos Montt to justice, and the Xinka resistance bringing the Escobal mine to a halt. From supporting genocide survivors to defending land against extractive projects, the ongoing grassroots work of NISGUA is a testament to the truism that our strength is in our relationships. Despite the borders that aim to separate us, we continue to connect struggles for dignified life!

Tuve la oportunidad de ser internacionalista con NISGUA entre 2023 y 2024. La brillante y tenaz red de NISGUA, junto con sus contrapartes que luchan en primera línea por la tierra, el agua y la preservación de la memoria histórica en Guatemala, me ha hecho crecer y me ha marcado profundamente.
Una mañana, durante el paro plurinacional anticorrupción de 106 días en Guatemala, une compa que hacía un turno de 24 horas frente al Ministerio Público de la capital me recordó que por cada persona que sale a la calle, hay otra que la apoya, cuidando de las cabras y los niños en casa. La participación de la persona que cuida de las cabras y los niños es igual de valiosa y necesaria. Pienso en eso a menudo en las acciones aquí: cuando hay 5000 personas en la calle, ¿cuantas miles más hacen posible que estén allí? ¿Quién cocina la comida gigante para compartir con les vecinos con los que nos estamos organizando? ¿Quién recauda los fondos? (¡tú y yo! ;)) Digo todo esto para recordarnos todo lo que se necesita para construir y sostener movimientos sociales.
Solo soy una de las innumerables personas que NISGUA ha vinculado en relaciones de solidaridad transfronteriza a lo largo de los últimos 45+ años. Durante todo ese tiempo, los movimientos sociales en los llamados EE. UU. y Guatemala han sufrido derrotas desgarradoras y han logrado victorias históricas. Victorias como el Caso Genocidio Ixil, que llevó a Ríos Montt ante la justicia, y la resistencia Xinka, que logró frenar la mina Escobal. Desde el acompañamiento a los supervivientes del genocidio hasta la defensa del territorio frente a proyectos extractivos, la labor de base que lleva a cabo NISGUA es una prueba de que nuestra fuerza reside en nuestras relaciones. A pesar de las fronteras que pretenden separarnos, ¡seguimos uniendo las luchas por una vida digna!
